Many people are looking to eat healthier, thus they adapt the vegan lifestyle. The Pescetarian Diet is the perfect diet for any individual transitioning into a vegan lifestyle. Although the diet resembles a vegetarian diet, there is an exception: seafood is allowed. Dairy is optional while using this diet, although there are no other meats allowed to be consumed. Even though ideal for vegans making the transition, there are also many other groups of people who can enjoy the diet.

The Pescetarian Diet was developed in 1993, although it has been a diet used even long before this time period.   During the more than 20 years of the diet’s existence there have been many to use the diet and find successful benefits.

Benefits of the Pescetarian Diet

There are a number of benefits found with the change in diet and the Pecetarian lifestyle. Since vegetables are a large portion of the foods consumed on the diet, as well as seafood, the diet is very healthy and can present a number of benefits to one’s health. Seafood is rich in iron, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and other vitamins and nutrients the body needs to stay healthy, and the vitamins have the same effect. Since there is no red meat consumed on the diet the risk of heart disease and other heart problems is greatly minimized, and this includes problems such as high cholesterol.

The diet enables a wide variety of foods to be consumed, and it is not as restrictive as many of them that are out there. Foods are easy to prepare, and with the numerous choices available it is easy to always please your dietary needs and all of the cravings that you want (minus the juicy rib-eye you were craving).

No animals are consumed while living the Pescetarian lifestyle, so for animal lovers keen on protecting their furry friends, this is a definite benefit. In addition this is a diet that is environmentally friendly. At the end of the day this is a diet that offers an array of exceptional benefits.

Disadvantages Noted

While for the most part this is a phenomenal diet with exceptional benefits there are a few negative points that you should be aware of before starting this diet. The negative points are minor, however, and for most people are not enough to forgo the diet. The main disadvantage is that you may be consuming a high level of mercury since there is a great deal of fish and seafood on this diet. Exposure to bacteria is a possible outcome of the diet as well, more so for those electing raw seafood and fish menus. Limited protein is a disadvantage with the Pescetarian Diet as well but can be supplemented if dairy is included in the plan.

The Bottom Line

The Pescetarian Diet is one that many people follow, including celebrities such as Howard Stern, Steve Jobs, Ted Danson and Ben Stiller, among thousands of others. The diet is certainly worth checking out. It is complete in nutrition and provides a fast and healthy way to shed the pounds. Talk with your doctor and turn your life over and become healthier – and slimmer- than you ever thought possible.
